Just found out that the excellent film Six Degrees of Separation is based on a true story. The tragic story of David Hampton who gained infamy in the 1980s after conning a group of wealthy Manhattanites out of thousands of dollars by convincing them he was Sidney Poitier’s son.
In the movie a young Will Smith plays an excellent role as an intellectual young man who charmes the Upper West Side folk with ease. The life of Hampton, just as in the movie, ends sad. In 2003 David Hampton died of AIDS-related complications while being treated for his illness in a Manhattan hospital.
